How goddam complicated is the air con system?!

Taken my car to TWO garages now who 'don't have the right machine' to find an air con leak! Damn island living! However both are happy to offer to relieve me of over 600 quid for a service!

I think it may be that the D2 system only has a single port whereas most (many) systems will have two.

I'm absolutely not an expert on this, just repeating what one of the team at A8parts told me when they were processing the gas in mine last summer.
Their machine just did everything automatically through a single hose, though it did take a hell of a time. No leaks, just a bit low on refrigerant.

It is the most insanely complicated and ill-conceived system I've ever seen. It does have two gas ports, but the one you would normally charge through (low pressure side) is hidden up by the bulkhead and impossible to reach with the normal connector. Why they would do that is a mystery. My AC guy charges it through the high-side port on the condenser which he says is stupid and the wrong way round but the only possible way to do it. He has to put the gas bottle in a bucket of hot water to get enough pressure for it to go in!

Don't even get me started on the nightmare of ducts and servo motors and that stupid coolant valve block http://www.corradov8.com/pics/banghead.gif

Thanks for the replies, not getting the warm fuzzies that this is likely to be fixed!

Booked into a third garage for Monday, if they can't do it looks like a mainland trip which will add £120 and two days off work to the bill!

MJ - worse case scenario, if I was to sweat the summer out is this something that could be tackled when it comes into you later in the year?

MikkiJayne 18th April 2018 03:22 PM

Yeah it could be. I presume the people you've asked so far don't have a connector for the high-pressure port?

Hmm, not sure, both have said 'it doesn't work with our machine' in perfect Mechanic Slapdash. They probably are in part right but haven't bothered any other than what they do for all the Euroboxes we seem to love here. I'm hoping it just a leak that needs fixing and regassing.

In fairness I don't know either of these garages but were mentioned to me as 'good for air con!' God help me!

Taking it to a place that was never flustered with any of the old barges I've thrown at them over the years, let's see what they can do? If they can't I guess we can see if we can possibly add it to the list for our Devon trip!

Final sling would be to try the Audi main dealer. If I had to make a one off trip to the mainland just for this it might not be that much more expensive overall, however I am pretty sure they have never seen a D2 before, ever! I've never seen ANY A8 of any flavour on an island plate in the ten years I've lived here. They are a combined VW/Audi/Merc garage all in one small building in Newport and love their Golfs, A3's and A Classes!

You did see the quote that Tintin was given by an Audi dealership, for the small control know that controls the DIS.

WARNING! If you haven't seen it, please sit down first:

If you're taking a ferry over from NI to GB and can get to A8parts in Eaglescliffe they DEFINITELY have the right machine and don't charge too much, though if they find a problem they're not equipped to do repairs.

Oh my giddy aunt! Haha, that would have just made me laugh! Yeah, I know the main dealer won't want to do it! Just as the weather is warming up nicely and all! Glad I have a sunroof!

Well, I'd need to get a ferry over to Hampshire first! :)

Seriously, a great idea and I wouldn't mind a trip BUT looks like a repair needed
