Current MOT until 29th June 2019.

Polishes up well for a 14 year old car, but isn't showroom fresh paint wise, some slight rust on front wings and stone chips & minor paint marks in-line with age and mileage.

There is no chain rattle on cold start, car uses some oil but that is not unusual (I've had 3 or 4 S4s over the years, all did!). There is no clutch slip, no cooling issues (aux rads are not leaking), it has had a replacement starter motor. Mileage has been low the last few years (as the MOT history shows), but it has been kept connected to a CTEK charger and run and used regulary!

As it stands it is a great car, but as you would expect there are a few niggles that I want to be open about. Normally I’d resolve before sale, but a 2 year old and 2 week old take all of my spare time, so I will factor into the price!
  • The roof motor needs to be replaced, or at least new bushes. This is a common A4 cabriolet issue and an easy fix, at a fixed cost of £95 in Harrogate or get a local garage to fit a £75 part. See http://www.autoelectron.co.uk/drive_in.html for more detail
  • The AC condenser was replaced a few years ago, however it hasn’t been used much since and it isn’t cold now. Assume it need a re-gas to get it icy cold again
  • My local MOT tester has noted the front top suspension arms have worn bushes for the last 5 years, however there is no knocking or symptoms and a second opinion was that the MOT tester was "keen" so to leave them as they were!
Current private sale guide price is £4,470, trade value £3,730. I am open to offers as it stands if there is interest on the forum, otherwise I will list on ebay when back at work next week!

Well, the timing couldn't be worse for me, but I'm still tempted by it all the same.

Mileage is the killer. Very tough to price it really.

Can't quite see if its got heated seats and / or cruise.

Its few niggles do add up (although the honesty is always appreciated). No working roof, and no air-con are immediate issues I'd want to fix.

Would I rather drive this, than my D3 ? Yes. 90% of the time I would.....

But would the Miltek sound as good as the B&O?.... Probably :D

With some patience, you'll do better, but for zero hassle trade type purchase I'd give £2750 for it, or £2900 if you get it dropped off in Harrogate.

I suspect something like WBAC would be similar when they've finished inspecting every body panel with a fine tooth comb as they do....

Sadly it has neither, cruise is easy to fit and I planned to do so day 1, but never found the need! There was also a plan for the seat heaters, supposedly the S4 seats have the mats in already so just a kufatec loom and a climate module, but I don't ever use the heated seats in my 8 so didn't investigate too far!

Agreed, or at least the roof! Climate becomes of diminishing value once the roof is down!

That's a little less than I was hoping for, how close do you live to Starbeck? I could get the roof fixed before I drop it off if it helps

Yeah, agreed, they would probably offer pennies in the pound - it won't be going there for sure!!!

A couple of things I forgot to mention in the original post:
  • The car is fitted with shiney RS4 pedals!
  • The xenon lights tend to be dimmer than candles at this age on the A4/S4 dur to reflector burn - so these have replacement projectors internally, which are actually bi-xenon lexus items - they are bright, properly working, aligned and legal +++

No worries. Wasn't expecting my arm taking off, but then, I'm really not looking to take on a car right now. I need to be down to 2 cars by the end of July. Buying the S4 would mean I'd be under pressure to sell both the D2 and D3 in the next fortnight.

Fixing the roof on my behalf holds no real extra value to me to be honest than the cost of the job and a couple of 10 quid taxi rides. Invaluable for someone else further away though no doubt.

The price valuations are generally based on the statistics gathered of similar cars going through trade auctions. The problem is, that the S4 4.2 engines don't enjoy a great deal of reliability into 6 figure mileages, and they're getting quite rare now anyway so I doubt there will be any realistic valuations for one with 168K on it, making any valuation, basically nonsense.

I suspect your best option is to Ebay it, with a low start and reserve price you can cope with. You'll end up with ~10% lower than its maybe worth listed on Autotrader, but at least you'll have a fair appraisal of its value from the bidders.

I’m sure I know this car - was it owned by a chap in Surrey as 2nd owner who fitted exhaust? If it’s the one I think it is, it went back and forth to Epsom hospital round the south side of the M25 to rack up most of the miles with the original owner

Oh that is lovely, never driven one of these but I want it badly

Its in my top 3 best ever Audis to drive. (Along side C6 RS6 and C6 S6)

The convertible has a low centre of gravity, so it handles shockingly well, combined with the V8 manual its a really fun car, especially with the roof down.

Boot space is pretty good, quattro 4 wheel drive. Mine had Sat nav, bluetooth, cruise and heated seats which are all retrofittable.

Split grill B6 looks a bit more dated than the big grill B7, but from inside the cabin you can't see that anyway.

They suffer from a handful of issues. Engine timing chain failure is the big one. Rust and roof issues are common across all the A4 Cabriolets, and the wings are Cab specific, and not available as pattern parts, so not cheap to replace.

But a lot of S4 cabs for sale will be suffering all or some of these issues. At least Pauls advert is honest.

I imagine the RS4 Cab he's just got is quite something.....

For contrast, the S5 cab isn't half as special. Sure its more modern, more toys, but the V8 makes this cab come alive. The 3.0Tfsi has some great cracks and pops with the DSG box, but its got no soul. Very clinical in contrast....

I'm going to shut up now, I seen to have diluted another car for sale thread.... ;)

You're really not helping! I have a holiday to pay for!

I posted up here a while ago about getting a cabby, I do have a thing for all the B6 & B7 models and I've always resisted driving a S4 cabby because I know I'd love it and reach for the credit card!

Plus I've caught red leather disease from my D2!

Not a great situation, I have no real pressure to sell other than it is summer, it isn't being used as the RS4 is there when I don't need the A8 and I have builders due to start work soon so don't want it getting damaged! Not sure of the drive to reduce your fleet, but hope all is well!?

I think I will probably list it without a reserve if I go that route, roll the dice and see what happens! I don't want to be relisting it repeatedly :/

That sounds correct, I flew down to Gatwick to collect it from him +++

Red leather disease - only one cure, lots of direct sunlight whilst sitting on red leather listening to a V8 rumble
