4.2 TDI glow plug brand?
 

Hi,
Does anybody know the standard brand/type of the original equipment glow-plugs on D3 A8 4.2TDI 2007 model?

Pretty sure it's Bosch, but other diesel owners should be around soon to confirm it

Thanks for reply I am swaying to Bosch to but read somewhere that I can't find right now, that if you remove the connector you can see one of two colours at top of plug if I remember right either red or black for different types.

Codes are showing that I need a new number 7.

The ceramic ones were BOSCH and a disaster and production change replaced with conventional metal BERU plugs. This was a few years before your car was made so I'm sure not ceramic. The ceramic had a white band and metal had a terracotta coloured band but some aftermarket have a black band. It is of importance because the two types are different volatge and so the ECU needs coding to avoid inoperable or blown glowplug.

I would just stick with BERU. I fitted NGK but if I would just get BERU if doing again as they were 2mm shorter.

Ps let me know how you get along with the change as I was told that they can be a pig to replace.

If they are the same as those on the 3.0TDI, they don't last very well. My old 2004 D3 had 3 sets replaced by the time the car was 8 years old. When the 3rd set were being fitted, the glowplug on cylinder 5 would'nt budge. The garage advised leaving it as it was a cylinder head off job if it broke insitu. They had tried heating, freezing, penetrating fluid etc. but were reluctant to go past a certain torque value.
I had the car for 2 more years and it was perfectly fine with 5 working glowplugs. I got the glowplug warning light disabled in the dash as the flashing light would annoy the hell out of me.
I normally would not opt for such a bodge but I was reluctant to risk having to remove the head on a high mileage car that wasn't worth much.
I would be careful about who you get to replace them if you are'nt doing it yourself.

I don't think the 4.2 falls under the ceramic glow plug issue.

Get the car nice and hot and use some plus gas soaked in for a while round the thread, I'd be inclined to buy a 1/4 torque wrench and use the ceramic glow plug torque values for undoing to save yourself headache.

My ceramic plugs came out ok on my 54 plate 3.0tdi, you may find yourself backing the plugs back in and then undoing a few times before they will release properly, spray more plus gas whilst doing this, the carbon jams the tip and this is what causes breakages, so in theory a good dose of carbon deposit cleaner run through the engine before removal may also help :)
