Not that that's a bad thing. I just think her songs (lyrically speaking at least) are more aimed at the female of the species. I do like some of her work though, particularly some of the tracks on her No Angel album.

Thinking about it, there are very few female singers I enjoy listening to. Not that I have anything against female singers, it's just not my taste, especially in the rock genre, which is what I tend to listen to the most. There are a few exceptions though, even in that genre; Bonnie Tyler, for example, and the fantastically powerful 'Alone' by Heart. There are a few others that spring to mind that I've always quite liked, like Enya, and for some reason Beverly Craven's Promise Me has always been a favourite of mine.

I love a bit of Pink Floyd; I could listen to their stuff all day long. I do like One of These Days, but I prefer their later work (Dark Side and onwards) to some of their earlier, almost psychedelic sounding tracks; Animals, The Final Cut, The Division Bell, Wish You Were Here, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason and, of course, The Wall, to name but of few of my favourite Floyd albums.

I kind of see "Chick singer" as meaning , t1ts, bum & pouting girly wirly pop idol drivel.
Dido is a chick and a singer, but not one of the above.
I too like Enya, and a lot of Ambient, that she leans towards. Great listening on a long chilled journey in an 8 :)

Saw Pink Floyd (Dark Side tour). Totally amazing. I do like some of the psychedelic stuff. Perhaps an age thing? I'm seeing Brit Floyd in Brum next Sunday. Great seats, center almost on the stage LOL. Seen them before and they were epic. They give the entire PF thing, sound, lights, visuals and of course Gilmour's lush guitar pieces

Oh, and on my car stereo - Stones (saw them in Leeds), Chicken Shack (I'd Rather Go Blind is a blues classic), Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit is Grace at her best IMHO), Jimi Hendrix (listen to The Wind Cries Mary if you think he's not your cuppa), James Taylor (seen in Edinburgh and Glasgow - he's still amazing), Loudon Wainwright (seen a few times), Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd (saw them with Sid in the Set the Controls days for ten shillings at Birmingham Town Hall and on The Animals tour), Paul Simon, Dylan, CSNY (seen them all too).....you know how old I am don't you!

Yeah, I can imagine. She's certainly not someone I'd consider going to watch live. I just used her as an example of one of the few female singers I can listen too. And, to be honest, in Bonnie Tyler's case it's just one or two tracks, and even for those the appeal (which is only slight) is more due to Jim Steinman's involvement than her voice.

Floyd are one of the few I would've liked to have seen live, especially the legendary 'The Wall' tour, though I would've loved to have seen the Dark Side tour too. Floyd are an unusual one in that respect though, in that they're generally a faceless band, known more for their sound than their appearance, an observation and point they themselves made in The Wall tour.

Absolutely agree (well, for the ones I've heard of. I'll take your word for it for the rest of 'em ;) ).

I wasn't for a moment suggesting there aren't any good female singers, just that not many of them appeal to me. I recognise they're talented but, bar a few exceptions, I just can't sit and listen to them. It's not a concious choice, the sound just doesn't appeal to me for whatever reason.

I'm not massively far behind you age-wise (I'm 45), but even a decade or so can make a huge difference of course. The 70s and 80s shaped my musical tastes, and to a much lesser extent the early 90s. I think once you get beyond your mid-twenties you care less about new music and it becomes much less of an influence on your musical tastes ... at least that's how it was for me. Judging by your list, there's a large overlap of bands we both like that, for me, starts to fade out a little with the pre-70s stuff.


I haven't actually been to a great deal of concerts myself. Thing is, at just 16 years old, I was fortunate enough to see Queen live (stood just a few feet from the stage) on their '86 Magic Tour. From the age of 10, I was a massive Queen fan. To me (and I'm sure many will agree), Queen were quite simply the best band on earth, especially their live performances. In some ways that spoilt live concerts from me .... I mean, how do you follow Queen?

I have seen a few other live music performances though. Supporting Queen, I saw Status Quo and, since, I've seen Brian May, Del Amitri, Crowded House, The Manic Street Preachers and Nickelback (I think that's about it).

Del Amitri are a surprisingly under-rated band who, in my opinion deserved more success than they've had. And, as with many bands, the stuff they're known for isn't their best work. Here's a couple of their lesser-known tracks that I think are worth a listen:
