Reversing Light Bulb

Does anyone know the fitting size for this?
I know that it is 12v 16W bayonet.
But iirc the bayonet size is smaller and I do not want to open the cluster just to check the physical size before I visit Halfrauds or a stealership to buy a bulb.

I think it comes with a plastic base and in a metal bulb holder - BUT
I *think* it is a T15 bulb stuck in a bulb holder and you get the bulb holder with it, but not sure.

The Audi P/Ns are:

pre-facelift 4E0945981 bulb with black socket

facelift 4E0945981A bulb with grey socket for back-up light 12V16W

Probably the same part anyway?

Ray, I've deleted my previous comment as now I think the only replacement is to buy part 4E0945981, that Snap posted, from the Sealership.

Matt, Thanks for the reply that I did not manage to see, deleted before I returned home, now I'll be losing sleep wondering about what piece of smart wit I missed :D

Snap, Thanks for the informative reply, ebay page from Italy, advertiser in Herefordshire and he appears to be working for Deutscheparts.
End result is that it could be a T15 holder.

The reason for this is that I want to replace my "going backwards" lights with LEDs, but I believe that they are canbus monitored (unless someone knows better) and I will have to run incandescent bulbs in parallel like as wot I aff dunn with my sidelights. I'm looking at CRE LEDs for their light output. My current Audi issued lamps are a bit dull.

I don't want you loosing sleep Ray.... My original comment :p

As with Snap, my thought it was a T15 / W16W.

But looking at photos the fitting does not look it takes the T15 capsule.
It may take a PU20d-1 / HPC16W

Sorry Ray I can't be 100% sure.
Deleted because PU20d-1 / HPC16W can't be separated from their base, so it was wrong info even though they look the correct shape and are 12v16w

Thanks for that Matt.
Having been out on a couple of jobs since has given me time to collect my memory. I think that T15 is the capless type of bulb like the sidelight. I am sure the reverse and brake lamps are bayonet.
I'll try and find time tomorrow to look at the assortment that Halfrauds carry and see if they have something similar.

tc4332 11th December 2015 12:21 PM

Halfrauds had nothing like.
All the American sites say it is a wedge(T15) bulb or capless.
I gave up and braved the bitter wind and freezing(well it felt cold enough) rain. What a hard job to change a bulb. Boot lining out, then the the lamp assembly, then split the lamp and there are the two bulbs. It was so cold I unscrewed the reverse light and took it indoors. Close look under a magnifying glass and it proves to be just like Snap showed. The whole assembly is what you replace if the bulb blows. I would hope that these would last longer than the car is expected to live.
There was me thinking that headlight bulb changing was difficult. The joys of owning an 8.

The sidelights are T10, which is 5W.
The number is the diameter in - 10mm.
The T15 is 15mm. There is also a T20.
All are wedge fitting, but I am not saying any of these fit the rear cluster.

Snap,
You were spot on with your first post on this thread.
I just thought/hoped that the bulb would separate from the holder, but typical Prussian design (they stick lots of words together to make one big word) they do not come apart.
Bulb welded into the holder, honestly, wtf?
Oh well, much further thinking to be done.
Do you know if the reverse light is monitored for bulb failure? I meant to try whilst I had it all open this morning but with frozen fingers I forgot that part of the job

snapdragon 11th December 2015 06:56 PM

Hello TC. Agh have you tasken yours out? It has been on my list of jobs but didn't fancy taking it out to see what type of bulb it is and then put it back and wait for new ones to arrive and then have to get them out again to replace. Maybe the old ones cand be broken out of the holder and new ones soldered onto the base?
