pulling away from the traffic lights on a slight hill in the town near where I live the car remains in 2nd when in auto ; if i change to manual it will change into 4th quite happily

Not unusual, do you know what your gearbox coding is?
Also, what age is your car - why not update your signature with a few specifics? ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong...

I'm fairly sure mine displays the same behaviour and tends to lurk in gear for a while. It will eventually change gear when the road levels out a bit. It's some kind of hill-climb assistance built in to the gearbox/electronics from what I understand. I normally force its hand by whacking it across the H-gate and telling it what gear I require.

Mine shows similar behaviour.
Is especially prevalent when cold.

thanks all for your comments; will stop worrying !
the temperature was very low when I noticed this , and the car had only run about a mile when i noticed ; maybe something to do with the transmission fluid temperature ?
