iPad help needed

As you know I am in fairly darkest India atm. Angla managed to loose her iPad on te plane journey! We have been lent an Ipad 2 that has been in a cupboard for a long time but with a charge it fired up ok. I returned it to factory and set it up with Angela's apple i.d. all fine so far. Went to download her Apps and got a message saying some of them wont run below ios 7 (its at ios 4) so it needs updating to ios 9. I downloaded the latest iTunes. Plugged in the iPad and backed everything up. Started the update so as to maintaimned data and it's stuck. Ipad screen just shows the USB lead, and and arrow pointing to itunes and every time I get to the point where is says it is waiting for the iPad, the Ipad switches itself of, iTunes shows a fault saying it can connect to the iPad and throws and error 9!

Any ideas?

I have fully charged it and tried 3 usb leads. Every time I plug it into the laptop it recognises it, starts iTunes and starts the process but now it says it has to restore to facory and update ios.

In my IT support capacity I generally avoid working on Apple products but, on one of the few occasions I have reluctantly helped to fix an iPad, I remember resolving a similar issue by using a 'forced restart'; have you tried that?:

Mark,

Thanks, but tried that. Just returns to the same screen saying connect to iTunes.

Try this, plug the iPad in to iTunes and do the force restart thing (top button, and bottom home button for 10 seconds) but don't let go after it resets, KEEP HOLDING the buttons until the recovery screen appears.

When you see the option to restore or update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. Wait while iTunes downloads the software for your device.
If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode, you'll need to repeat these steps and choose Restore instead of Update when you get back to this step.

After the update (or restore) has completed you'll need to set up the iPad again.

Ollie,
Thanks I'll give it a go. It's a 1.3 Gb download at 0.3 meg line speed. Gonna take a while!

I was about to recommend the same thing. Recovery of DFU mode should be the way to go. When all else fails. Hope you get it sorted.

OK, at my wits end! I've always hated Apple products. Bought by people scared of technology and getting their hands dirty.

So it's in DFU mode. Stuck in DFU mode. In fact I cant switch it off. If I attach it to a charger it switches on and won't charge because it is on. Hold the power button and off goes the screen for a few seconds and on it comes again.

So I plug it into the laptop and it runs through the process but every time the big apple and the update bar appear after a few seconds it switches itself off and the iTunes shows and unknown error (9).
Not that I'm pedantic but how can you give an unknown error a number? If you don't know what it is how do you know which number to give it!

Any other ideas? The pad just sits there in DFU mode, screen on until the battery is flat. Plug it into its charger and then the screen comes on after a few seconds and wont take a charge.

Doing a little research on that error code, it sounds like something is preventing it from accessing Apple's servers, either something security related, as 47p2's link suggests, or some other connection issue. It may even be that the broadband connection you are using is too restrictive and is blocking or interrupting the connection.

Some links with a few more suggestions to try:

http://www.jailbreaktrend.com/how-to...s-4-ipad-ipod/

From the information I can find, it does seem to be a very vague error code though, one that can mean numerous things. Some people seem to have had success in recovering from the error, while others have had devices replaced by Apple after being told their device was unrepairable.

Additionally, I have just found this information posted by a fellow techie forum member when he came across the same issue recently (this is a guy who has much more Apple experience than I do) :

Yeah that's the problem, it's stuck in recovery mode and will not get into DFU mode. We've tried every combination of power and home buttons dozens of times. :(

I just fixed it this morning and here is how I did it. I also confirmed the upgrade to iOS 9 is what broke it. If you get one stuck in recovery mode with no way to get it out, follow these steps.

1. Go to http://www.wondershare.net
2. Download and install Dr. Fone for the OS you're running (no need to purchase it, free trial will work)
3. Connect your tablet and close iTunes if it opens
4. Open Dr. Fone software (click free trial) and click the button that says Restart the device
5. You should now see the desktop, if not proceed to step 6

6. If you still have the plug into iTunes after you restart the device in Dr. Fone, close Dr. Fone program
7. While tablet is still connected to your computer, open iTunes and you should be greeted with an option to set up your iPad as a new iPad.
8. Click set up as new iPad and you should now see the desktop.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO iOS 9

I just had to confirm iOS 9 broke this tablet so I did the upgrade once again after I got it working on the original 4.3.5 and once again it was stuck in this recovery mode with no way to turn it off or access DFU mode.

Hope this helps someone in the future (maybe even me as my memory isn't what it used to be)

Thanks for this. I will try it tomorrow. +++
