Lidl SDS Drill now deaded
 

Lovely drill, had it for years and done all sorts of really stupidly hard work.
Even used it to drive a home made 12 foot drill underground through foundations and across the garden to save digging a trench for armored cable.
Now, sadly, it has finally fallen off it's perch. I've killed it.
Only want to drill two 50mm holes through the outside wall (brick and block) so looked to hire one for a day and that nearly made me fall off my perch.
I'll have to buy another one.

I'm sure my b&q job was pretty reasonably priced when I bought it last year.

Buy a nice new one with all the money you saved with the old one. +++

Trouble is that it one of those tools that sits in the garage doing nothing until an urgent job crops up that it is ideal for.

Then again it has never let me down before, even when last year I managed to burn out one of the armature coils. Just needed a quick mallet tap to start it sometimes, but today another coil went south and though I can get it rotating it is rather rough and it smells a bit burny.

Sad, really sad. Though it has earned a long and peaceful retirement.

I have this Titan from Screwfix which has held up amazingly well. It drilled a dozen 25mm holes in the reinforced concrete workshop floor when I put my lift in, knocked a double doorway in a breeze block wall, and drilled many large holes for conduit and cable. Can't argue for £65 +++

Ok, I’ve had a minute.

My fondest memory is the time Ray brought most of Wigan to a standstill.

It was June, and BBQ’s were smoking away amongst the haze of summer. A calm silence filled the air of Wigan.

Like an Alpha Cockerel at dawn, Ray rose and prowled down the garden to his shed. As he returned from his shed, you could feel something was about to happen.

Ray moved like a Panther, grappling with something big, all around were terrified. Ray had a look in his eyes, and meant business.

He gathered pace, and darted around, waving his thing about, and shouted loudly to his neighbours “SAY HELLO TO MY LIDL FWEND”.

I hope my recollection helps us to remember the good times, and not focus on the loss.

Nicely put John, it really has done some work over it's lifetime. Mixed loads of concrete before I bought a proper mixer and it broke up all the rocks for my Mega Water Feature.
I wonder, did one of the neighbours sneak in and kill it for me?

All I wanted to do was drill two 50mm holes through the outer front and back walls (one hole each wall).
Gwen's Xmas pressy from me is an eight channel Digital Video Recorder (DVR) plus eight cameras mainly so she will be able to watch the birds and squirrels on their respective feeders. Two of the cameras will be in her bird boxes.
The holes need to be 50mm so that the plugs and cables can fit through without me needing to cut the cables and then rejoin them. These holes will have IP66 boxes over them so everything will be waterproof.
The sad bit is that I have been waiting for a day of reasonable weather so I could get the ladders out, mark the walls to make sure I hit the sweet spot between the two halves of our house, and start manufacturing 50mm holes at a slightly upward angle.
But as you now know my LIDL Friend let me down.
I just might be able to borrow one, if he would answer his phone.
Oh sugar, he'll have read this so I guess he will have switched his phone off. :D
I've spotted a McAllister at some £60 odd that looks like it'll do the job.

Gwen was not happy, she did her tank at one of our neighbours who went out shooting tree rats. That was OK until she realised what he meant by tree rats.

Everyone is is in bed and I'm ruminating, used to be called chewing the cud.
I've been looking at my 50mm core drill and realised that it is not the cheap and nasty that I thought. I must have spent some pennies when I purchased it. I was thinking that it was a one piece of metal lump but now looking at it closer have realised that it is a good quality one with an arbor and facility for a guide drill to be fitted.
Tomorrow's job is holding it over the gas hob, applying loads of heat and attempting to crack the short arbor from the core drill. I have just ordered a new 350mm arbor on fleebay in anticipation of a good result from the application of heat. Soaking in WD40 didn't help at all, but then it has done a lot of work just like my dead Lidl SDS drill.
Anyone got a spare pair of asbestos gloves?
Then again Johnmed does not live too far away, I might be able to get him to come round and apply bandages and other care if needed. ;) :D
