Info: Vodafone PAYG SIM APN Settings

Wanting to cheaply test out the SIM slot in my car I picked up a Vodafone PAYG pack at Tesco (no charge for this). I added a fiver's worth of credit, popped the SIM in the slot and...nothing. Kept getting 'The data connection could not be opened. Please try again later.'

After much research and messing about the default APN (ie connection) settings were wrong. Correct ones to use (for PAYG!) in Tel> Data connection > Connection settings are:

APN: pp.vodafone.co.uk
Username: wap
Password: wap
Authentication: Normal

Finally, Audi connect works. Is it worth it? Hmmm....

Well at least your mmi reads the sim. My damn one does not recognise any sim.

Yes - so I saw from a previous thread. Do you get any message when you insert a SIM? I started off with a Three SIM which as I now know won't work on early cars and got a message advising to check the SIM.

I tried Neeldub EE sim also no joy. Only thing I can do now is update the SW as it’s factory version. Again will have to wait on Neel as I don’t have SW update. I see you recently updated yours? Was it easy and did you purchase it from the Stealers?
My data connection is grayed out. So basically it does not at all pick up any sim! I will try to clean the connectors with IPA on some perfume testing paper me thinks.:Confused:

Really unlikely to be a physical issue with the SIM card slot. If you have an android handset that supports rSAP you can test the theory by accessing the SIM via bluetooth and see if the connection works?

Unfortunately I don’t have android but will see if I can log my friends one

Or does your car have a built-in phone under the armrest as I think that will work as well?

I upgraded my firmware via Julian at https://www.vag-technik.co.uk/. I know you can download the firmware for free but I wanted map updates as well. I've done firmware updates on previous Audis I've owned but research on the D4 felt like it was going to be a little more involved and this time round I was happy to pay for specialist expertise. Total cost was £93 (mostly the map update, which requires activation) and that included Julian being at the end of a phone and WhatsApp for a full weekend whilst we got this sorted.

Julian supplies everything as Audi OEM SD cards however it was a bit more involved going from P0065 (which I think is very early) as the first intended upgrade (K0485) couldn't be applied. From the error message we found a Russian Audi club website where members were reporting a same issue. Between Google Translate and Julian being able to read Russian we were able to figure out what to do which was to apply K0612 first, then K0770 and finally K0942. All before the map updates!! Key thing is to use the hidden green menu to enable user defined mode so that BOSE updates can be excluded (BOSE can go in to component protection if doing this at home). Julian was brilliant and can highly recommend.

What firmware are you on (Menu > Setup MMI > Version information)?

My one is the factory SW dated 2014. Sounds very complicated from your end. I have done the SW and maps update on my previous D3 which was quite straight forward. Kept the engine running whilst I did it.

Pretty sure that 2014 firmware will work fine. How about grabbing a free Vodafone PAYG SIM from Tesco, sticking a fiver credit on and editing the APN?

Hi mate. The thing is that I have tried both EE sim and 3 which both worked on Neels car and not mine. My data connection is grayed out.
