Minimum 2G version for AMI External device install

Hi all,

I have ordered the 2G External device AMI 4E0057785F and 30pin iPod cable

My current MMI version is 28.6.0 0620

HW 6300D2

Could anyone advise if I need to do an MMI upgrade first and if so?

1. Which version do I need to have installed
2. What is the upgrade path to that version (i.e, is there a stepped upgrade path or do I just go straight to that version)
3. Is there any benefit in going higher than the stated minimum version and if so best way to do so (again in steps or just from my version to latest)
4. best place to get FW upgrades from and I assume I need to burn these to a particular type of DVD? If so which?

I'll go take a look for firmware upgrade FAQ/Stickies as well now....

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me

2860 is a rare version of MMI for A8s; most cars from that era seem to have 2120 or 3460. The 3460 update is the first I'm aware that included an update to the AMI firmware [to 0170] which implies it must also support AMI. But it's possible that AMI support was introduced earlier than that, so your 2860 may well work.

The last version of 2G MMI was 5570 which came as part of a 3CD set containing 5150, 5570 and Bluetooth phone ECU updates [BTA and HandyVorb2]. Amongst other things, 5150 will update the AMI to level 0850, if it isn't already at that level.

There are no known issues going from MMI 0890 onwards direct to 5150 and it's probably possible to go straight to 5570. However, since the update set contains both CDs, you might like to consider 5150 then 5570. [I went from 0890 to 5150 and then 5570].

If you have the original 'SIM in the arm' phone ECU, that should already be at 0770 so no further updates will take place. If you have a BlueTooth phone ECU, there are no updates on the 5155/5570 CDs; they're all on the BT Phone update CD. From MMI 2860 there will be major updates to 1130 [HandyVorb2] or 1120 [BTA].

I would buy the 'original' 3CD set for the least risk. Not sure if they are still available from Audi dealers; you may need to ebuy them! Someone else on this forum may well advise ...

That MMI level is, as I said above, very rare. I've been keeping track of firmware levels of MMI components against MMI levels and I've never seen a list for version 2860 as in your car.

I don't suppose you have a VCDS Autoscan for your car?

Failing that, I don't suppose you look at the levels of the MMI devices using the 'hidden Red screen' process? [Text file attached]. Don't need all the data, just the Devicename and SW-Index ...

Let me go do that now.....

Have ordered from Audi what they termed a "repair kit" with the part number in the MMI update thread I saw - £8.75 so hope it's right :-)

He seemed a little reluctant to sell it - wouldn't really confirm the MMI update bit or at least went a little quiet when I told him I was using it to update the MMI version.

Oh - and I have the green Audi bluetooth BTA system so no phone in armrest.

I presume you ordered 4L0 998 961? Strictly speaking it's for Audi use only so some suppliers are reluctant or won't sell it to end users. It dates from 2008 so I'm slightly surprised it's still available.

The CDs aren't labelled; #1 is 5150, #2 is Bluetooth, #3 is 5570

If you've got a VCDS scan or if you run the Red Menus, I can tell you what you're going to update with each CD.

Please see attachments - they're photos of each screen which shows what I've got and versions.

Hope that helps :-)

Very Helpful :)

In order:

1) Interfacebox [aka Control Head] is the 'computer' that runs the MMI software. Currently 2860, it will go to 5150 [5150 CD] and 5570 [5570 CD].
2) BTA [Bluetooth phone] currently 0530, will go to 1120 [BT CD]. May take over 30mins and need 2 passes of the update runs.:(
3) BO-D3 [B&O Amp] currently 0180 will go to 0310 [5150 CD] and 0320 [5570 CD]
4) NavBox [Navigation drive] not done by MMI CDs, is updated by Navigation DVD. Current version 0850; final firmware 1060 is on all map DVDs from 2009.
5) DAB - 0830; already @ final version
6) SDS - 0630; already @ final version
7) Tuner currently at 0570 will go to 0620 [5150 CD] and 630 [5570 CD].
8) CD changer - 0470; already @ final version
9) Gateway - not updated by MMI update CDs

I would guess 5150 update will be about 15mins and 5570 about 10 mins. BT update will be a lot longer.

Thanks Julian - I've ordered from Audi using the part number that I think SnapDragon specified (whoever did the MMI update PDF) - this is the one they listed as "repair kit"

I assume I can run this with engine running and all electrical components aside from MMI turned off?

Read that was the way to do it from the PDF - don't have a home charger to do it any other way.

+++

I would run CD1 first [go to 5150] and then CD3 [go to 5570]. Then consider if you want/need to run CD2 to update the BT phone software.
