Its a 1998 PF, which is actually the first PF I've owned. I don't even get them in the workshop much. It was registered to VAG UK for its first year so I think it may have been a demo or press car, and as such it has many toys including blinds, auto mirrors, alcantara seats, satnav, ski bag, solar roof, rear parking sensors, and headlight washers. Its been with the same owner for the last 10 years or so and done very little mileage in that time. He bailed on it when the steering rack sprung a leak, and I couldn't let it go for scrap so I jumped on it. Its getting the treatment over the next couple of weeks and I'm hoping to have it for sale at AITP - no pressure then!

It has the threaded inserts in the floor for the tunnel brace, but for some reason just plugged up. Not sure if this is factory or someone has removed it? It'll get one fitted anyway.

Its had a gearbox rebuild within the last 10K, and for some reason they seem to have sandblasted the whole gearbox, so the sump is in a right state. I'll get this blasted and powdercoated.

At some point, presumably when the gearbox was removed, the boss for the heat shield and exhaust hanger was broken off :( Not sure how I'll fix this - I may need to swap the rear casing, or it might be possible to weld it in place

Five original Avus 1 wheels with centre caps :veryhappy: These were actually the reason I bought the car since they are so rare. Even if the car turned out to be a lemon, it was worth buying just for the wheels. These are in for refurb while its on the lift

Not sure at all! I fear I have may have bonded with it because its a lovely place to sit :o

I have come to the realisation that sitting in them is the critical first impression for me. If it is immediately cosseting and cosy like a D2 should be, I feel good about the car and have a tendency to keep it. If its stinky and minging and I have to put a lot of hours in to make it nice, I don't develop an attachment to it, hence why I almost scrapped the murple.

However, I can't keep this one. I have too many already and I have no need for it, no matter how nice it is :rolleyes:

Question for those more knowledgeable than me on the PF: is the inlet manifold different between A8 (AEW / ABZ) and S8 (AHC)?

Etka isn't very clear as it calls it 'suction pipe with elbow' :rolleyes: The AHC has a different suffix, but the same throttle body... :Confused: Of course none of the number match anything on the actual manifold!

The d2,s are a bit like stray dogs to you i think ,(u haven't got the heart to turn them away ),good luck with the refurb ,will 200hrs ish do it ?

200 is probably about right for this one since its in pretty nice condition apart from the leaks and the horrid car dealer lacquer, and it has all come apart reasonably well.

I started taking it apart in the middle of last week. First job - disconnect the steering column from the rack before it goes on the lift :rolleyes:

Saturday now. Engine removal, starting from underneath. I mentioned that the heat shield bolt on the driver's side was snapped off - the passenger side bolt has been gorilla'd as well and I can't get it off. The heat shield was already broken on one side so I just snapped it off. More on this mess later.

The power steering fluid is pretty grim, which is weird considering how much it was leaking. I'd put half a litre in it just moving it around the place. This will all get cleaned and replaced though.

When the gearbox was done the cam position sensor was refitted with the cable sitting on the exhaust manifold instead of behind the heat shield! How it was still running is a mystery.

I don't have mounting brackets to fit the 32V for the splitting machine so I just supported the engine with the crane and rolled the gearbox off the back of it

Home-made crank locking tool :D I loosened the crank pulley bolt before putting it on the stand, since these things are so tight that with the engine on the stand I can't put enough torque on it to loosen the bolt without the stand falling over!

I'm guessing the break pad sensor threw up a implausible signal fault and so they by-passed it?
