The difference between Foglights on FL1 (MY2000) and FL2 (MY2001-2002)
 

Every now and then I hear someone ask the old question, "Do the 2-piece foglight grills from the 2000 model cars fit on the 2001 or 2002 model cars.

Due to my accidental misfortune, I can definitively say "No They Dont"!

You see, I ordered some time ago the "last stock at Audi Germany" facelift front spoiler/lower valance, to replace the valance on my car which had a large crack in it (thanks to PO).

I have the part number as per one of the online ETKA style catalogue sources, and either me, or my supplier, or Audi, got the part number (or at least the suffix) wrong.

Anyway, i was oblivious to this until it came to fitment time. Everything "looked right", but there were only two securing tabs for my three-tabbed foglights... oh hang on, the hole is smaller too!

See photos below - the whole foglight grille area is smaller on the FL1, compared to the FL2!

Is it just the scuffs/camera angle that are causing an optical illusion, or is the lowest part of the bumper shallower (further from the ground) in FL2 as well?

The centre section is virtually identical - the chrome centre grille of the FL2 fits the FL1.
The foglight cut outs are much smaller on FL1, which is pretty visible, but the optical illusion is that the FL2 foglight grilles are really deep and go below the level of the centre grille.
It looks really odd off the car, and when the foglight grilles are out.

The FL2 valance in my comparison shots is sitting on a bucket, the new FL1 valance is sitting on the ground.
So there is a physical height difference of a few inches.
