97 4.2L - Lucas Calipers .... front pad options?

Hey guys, new about this place.

I recently picked up a 97 4.2L quattro that needed front rotors and pads replaced (UK personal import into Australia)

Didnt think this would be a problem as I run my own business in performance parts. ... But wrong I was.

After lots of googling, A8 forum searching and measuring, turns out my car runs a (cant remember exactly off the top of my head) a bit rare 310mm or 314mm front rotor. Not the same as teh AU specced car. .. Anyway I located them at a semi reasonable price.

Then I started looking for pads. Im a dealer for Winmax brakes, and they dont do the Lucas caliper shape, only the brembo. My other brake supplier could only find a Remsa Pad to fit (its 4 pads per front corner) ... and to be honest once installed I find them horrible. Soft pedal, no modulation, they squeal (I dont mind squeal in a performance pad). 1500km in they are getting worse. have bled the system, ourselves and by a audi tech, pressure tested the system and master cyl and no leaks .... so conclusion is these Remsa's suck

The only brake brands I normally deal with are Winmax and Project Mu, none of which do this shape pad. I'm ideally looking for a brand/spec that will take a bit of abuse (I also race, so I drive my road cars a bit enthusiastically) .. good braking torque, dust and noise im not overly concerned about, maybe rated to 500C at least? Organic, semi metallic, not fussed

In my searching on the web I cannot find this pad in a performance spec. Mainly due to the brands in Europe being things never heard of here, ... can anyone give me some suggestions please?

This is the info I have
Remsa #0508.02

Many online catalogues, if you put in 97 A8 D2 4.2Q it only gives you the brembo single pad per side option

Appreciate any input

I don't know what it's like to get parts in Oz mate but here in the UK there are a few options. Something like this http://www.eurocarparts.com/brake-pads

Not sure on anything more race prepped unless you change out the calipers and disc's for Brembo or ATE from an S

I sent a PF S8 grill out there and it cost a shed load to get it there, not sure how horrendous dealer parts are out there but by the time something is sent it could be cheaper. Other thing would be the sites sponsors they would possibly be able to advise on shipping costs.

Oh and yes they'll be 314 i think.

Hi,

Eurocarparts - http://www.eurocarparts.com/ - do Pagid (standard, domestic use only) front pads for the Lucas system on the '97 A8 4.2 which look like what you are after tho' i leave to to you to check the dimensions. Also, our forum sponsors are used to shipping stuff around the world so they may be able to source and ship them for you. Where abouts in the land down under are you? I can do personal delivery to Perth WA in March!

This is the tech spec from the eurocarparts site

Brake System Lucas
Connector Shape Round
Height 1 [mm] 75,3
Height 2 [mm] 74,6
Number of pads 8
Number of Wear Indicators 2
Thickness [mm] 17,5 Wear Warning Contact With integrated wear sensor
Width 1 [mm] 63,4
Width 2 [mm] 78,3

Well, you seem to have the same message from Dezzy as from me so there must be some truth in what we said!!

I can't offer the "hand job" though David

looks like the ATE spec for the S8 to me

http://www.webdealauto.com/fr/jeu-de....310021/1.html

presumably you can buy tax free from the EU, but guaranteed there will be an importer in OZ

RacingR 23rd November 2015 06:17 PM

Thanks for all the responses everyone. More help than one of my local brake suppliers here.

I do import a lot of stuff from Europe, some times freight is cheap, sometimes its stupid amounts.

ATE, I've never heard of them, but are they good? ... I've had Pagid's on my C200K which were alright, very similar to the Winmax W1's i normally sell.

To give you an idea how much we get *ss raped on prices here, ... I'm an authorised Sparco Dealer, ... and its cheaper to import seats from the UK than it is to buy from the Sparco Importer in Australia. ... Also for a laugh I called up Audi for a price on OEM pads up front only. $1076!! where I paid cost price $125 for these!

Keep the suggestions coming if there are some

Thanks

Damo

Oldnick, thanks for the info about them being similar to the S8 of the time with the ATE system. I've just looked up my Winmax stuff, and they list a pad for the ATE system, but dont have a diagram, so something for me to look into.

But with that info it's allowed me to find the EBC listings, which im familiar with, EBC Optimax im sure I'll catch fire too (have dont that with greens in a smaller car) but reds and yellow are good options there. .. along with Hawk

Thank you very much guys!

Some of the sites will be helpful too for my other car which is an E38 740IL, although parts for them are more common here, still lets me look at options

I use these on my 323mm brakes: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAKE-PADS...obbuo21c5NWw0A

314mm and 323mm does have different part numbers but the pad itself is the same, it's just that the ones for 314mm have extra counterweight to reduce vibration, noise & squealing but 323mm doesn't to save the space and not rub on 16" wheel as the pads sit further from centre on 323mm brakes.

So in theory, could my A8 run the 323mm rotors? I'm running factory optioned 18's, .... just that the 314mm were a pain to locate (here in australia anyway) and the 323mm was everywhere pretty much

Still waiting to hear from Winmax Japan to see if their WMP326 pad is the one I have, ... as its listed as the ATE S8 Pad, .. but no diagrams to be found anywhere

My mate is borrowing my A8 while we mess around with his Hilux and do an engine swap as it has a BHG, .... even he came home this arvo saying the Remsa's on there are a piece of sh*t .... so at least its not only me :D
