Open circuit on the external temperature sensor. Could be the connector under the passenger side headlight, or the sensor has just failed. Bumper off to swap it :)

That makes sense -40C is probably the lowest the "system" will compute.

Also happens to be -40F, so you can get the same lower limit in the USA!

I have seen that temperature on a car before, but it was my old Ford Focus and the external temp sensor was: a) optional to display and b) easy to swap.

It returned to normal after 10 minutes driving: the "environmental condition" that seemed to cause this anomaly was leaving the engine running whilst jet washing the car (don't ask...).

Strange all the same...

My money would be on the jet wash being the cause - worth checking for any loose connections
