Mpg

Hi all.

My D3 is never going to be a hypermiler, but I'm thinking my MPG is a little low, even for winter. The last tank has been say 45% motorway at 80-85 and the rest pretty short journies (when I've not been able to use the wife's Honda) driven conservatively. Maybe the car idled for an hour when I was updating the MMI.

Should I be expecting more than ~27mpg? Was expecting a tad more...

I have VCDS (eBay cable) and it can't communicate with the engine, all other modules are ok. When I've used VCDS' generic OBD scan on the engine no faults are registered. Annoyingly it scans other Audis just fine!

Cheers. John.

I'd expect more than that with a 3.0TDI, but i'd love that with my S8

Ha. Exactly. Purely depends on your perspective doesn't it.

Quality of the fuel? Is that a Costco petrol station?

Yeah. Pretty much run the car on CostCo's premium diesel.

Special thanks to Ray and his lovely wife, for today. Ray scanned my car with (genuine) VCDS. Turns out the old girl has no faults engine wise. She gets up to temperature as she should, brakes don't drag etc.

I presume she just likes a drink! A bit more in the cold too.

Might just be driving style, I use cruise a lot on motorways, makes a big difference set at 75 and just chilling

I would expect around 35mpg based on your description of usage.
Might be worth having a look at the air filter, a fresh air filter can make a big difference. Sometimes the air filter box can also be full of leaves etc.

The 3.0 does indeed fill its air filter up with shmutz. I may well change it out, its been a while since I last did TBH

On our first trip to the in-laws' place in France year before last I got 35mpg, last year I paid special attention to fuel consumption as there was a fuel shortage in France and we got 32mpg at ~85mph. I put this down to newly installed 19s, that replaced the 17s it came with. Was a little disappointing, I won't lie.

Might be worth a couple of shots of Red-Ex or Wynns. Perhaps poor injector spray pattern. For the relatively inexpensive cost, it's worth a try.
