Retro fit Reverse camera

I started rabbeting on in another thread so thought i would start another one,

so i bought this camera http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-View-...#ht_2571wt_698

im going to buy this cable
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CT29AU02-A...ht_3148wt_1022

if i wire it all up and take the power from the reverse lights then it will only power on when in reverse and maybe code the MMi so that when reverse is engaged then it switches to Av 1 ( Question can this be done ? )

or do i wire it up live so that i can switch to Av 1 anytime when driving and see whats behind ?

has any one done this before ?

although its not clear it is a black one

I think if I had the choice I would rather the camera came on with reverse automatically if it can be coded that way, much less hassle than switching manually every time you want to use it. +++

True, i know a cople of people that have done this on the D2 but not the D3, with the D2 i think you can code the RNS-E for a Can bus message to engage the Camera when reverse is selected,
But im not sure with the D3 if its as Simple to do it, i would think that it would work, ether way i will get it to work but the main thing is would i be able to code it to work with reverse selected

This is the best mod to do that you will make great use of, had it on my '8 and James from OBD Works (Mkoneman) is fitting one on my RS6.

i dont think you can code it that way, be great if you could.

there is someone on ebay selling a fitting service using much the same camera, to do this he also fits a device at the front which hooks up to the MMi and also gives you several other inputs as well as the reverse camera. you would have to run the camera lead from under glove box to rear though (unit costs around £149)

also Guy, have you got a 2 screw number plate light or the single screw joby?

daviesbike 29th April 2012 12:24 PM

yea i think it will be use full as i already made the mistake of relying to much on the parking sensors and when it turned off i reversed into a wall on my drive way, although there was a plastic down pipe there thank fully that i hit first rather than my wall, so camera time i think , should work i think , just need to find the coding for it to work when you select reverse

daviesbike 29th April 2012 12:27 PM

They are two screw jobbies with clear lenses so the new one i ordered that is clear will match, although i said above that its black its not,

do you have a link at all to that ?would be intrested if it had some other use full inputs also

limoncello 29th April 2012 12:38 PM

link to the unit

http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.ph...8&cat=4&page=1

basically you take the lvds lead out of the mmi and plug in to this unit then take the units lvds lead and plug in to the mmi, couple of power leads and one other connection

you can then access the devices you plug in from the mmi, plus when you use the reverse output connection with the camera it auto switches across.

mine is also the 2 screw version, theres very little room behind it, it looks like you made the right choice of camera as the first one i bought didnt fit as it had gubbins in the rear of the plate that just wouldnt go in.

http://www.connects2.co.uk/Instructions/CT29AU02.pdf

found this as a guide to fitting the AV1 input but there is no real indication as to what the five leads represent ie red is to go into pin 9 yellow goes into pin 5 ect ect do you remember off hand where they went ?
