S8 D2 wing mirrors

I have a D2 4.2 Q Sport. So not quite an S8. As of this afternoon, I have precisely 50% of the customary number of wing mirrors.

I will get a price for a painted replacement tomorrow, but I've started to wonder about putting S8 wing mirrors on instead. I've seen a pair in Europe for a not unreasonable price. So, questions.

1. Any reason why D2 S8 wing mirrors would go onto a D2 A8?
2 if I get European ones, will the driver's side mirror dip when I select reverse, or is that all dealt with by electronics in the car?

TIA.

You might find the glass convex in each is the wrong way round. That may or may not just be a swap.

Someone on here will know I'm sure...... +++

They are different so not 100% compatible,
I believe. The caps will fit, but even they're not a straight swap as mountings are different

Personally I wouldn't bother, especially as s8 mirrors are more desirable to steal

A8 and S8 mirrors of the same era are interchangeable. They do differ pre and post facelift, and in Europe some cars have smaller passenger mirrors, which means you'd end up with a silly small drivers mirror....

Give a8parts a call, they're the best place to go for compatible parts +++

Lhd and rhd will vary too won't they Ian? Will have dipping on wrong side, for a start?

The mirror dipping mechanism is controlled by the memory module, which doubtless will have a coding for left/right hand.

I'd be gobsmacked if the actual mirror mechanisms were in any way handed...

Cheers all.

It's the entire assembly, like this:

http://images3a.snapfish.com/2323232...%3B42346nu0mrj (I know that's not the right item). So the fitting issue is whether the triangular mount on the door, just forward of the window, is the same size.

Studying the photos that I have access to suggests that the passenger side mirror does indeed have a wide angle outer quarter, which the driver's side mirror doesn't. I wouldn't have thought to check for that.

Prepare to be gobsmacked... Mirror mechanisms are different for LHD and RHD cars (denoted by 4D1 and 4D2 part number prefixes) It is to do with the way the mirror adjusts depending on the side of the car you are sitting. You need the mirror closest to you to adjust in a different way to the mirror further away. Doudbtless you could probably get away with the wrong ones but the adjustment wouldnt be 100% right...

Is your A8 PF or FL?

My S8 mirrors have an additional block of connectors that are not evident in that picture.
See: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showpost....73&postcount=8

As for convex sections, it's my drivers mirror that has a separate "wide-angle" section on the outer edge and both mirror glasses are slightly convex overall.

That with heated memory mirrors of a PF S8.

FL car. Registered late 1999 but 2000 model year.

I'm looking at these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1210224029...84.m1423.l2648

At the moment onthe driver's side, the triangular trim just forward of the window is in place, but where the wing mirror should be, I have this: http://i.ebayimg.com/22/!BqW6YjwBWk~$%28KGrHqQOKjoEu,h,DsM0BLvb8E%29fC!~~_ 35.JPG

The mechanism is hanging off. Whether it can be remounted, I don't know. I rather doubt it. The housing and the glass are destroyed. From what I remember the last time this happened, the housing has to be painted, which adds ££. The S8 complete units look like a relatively quick fix.
