I'll wait for someone with more knowledge and a better answer than mine, but I would imagine the flexis are there for a reason. I had one of mine blow and VRS did replace it, so they are available.

No. The ignitor is what connects directly to the bulb. The ballast is a rectangular box mounted to the right of the driver's headlamp.

Perhaps the ballast is on it's way out. You can try swapping them over and see if it shows the other side as faulty? Did you replace it with a good quality bulb?

I've never seen a 10 year old S8 for less than 500, be it a D2 or D3. Prices have held well for good examples. The D4 is getting close to 10 years and I don't see that dropping below 10k anytime...

I think the closest place to you is AMD Essex. There may be others but they have done other cars before and so know what they are doing.

VRS in Northampton also do this, if you fancy a trip.

One of those had failed on my car when I bought it. When you said you swapped the ballasts but it seems you swapped just the igniters. If it is the part at fault, have a look on ebay for a Hella part...
