Finally all sorted. Looks like the box had been leaking for so long that the level was too low. Had a replacement prop end seal fitted along with a full flush and service and it's fine now.

I've have had a slight leak from the gearbox - not enough to drip but it does smell and there is some wetness around it. There's a specilist local to me so I'm going to give them a call tomorrow.
