Guys,

As a follow-up, the fix was a replacement throttle body. I picked up a new one in Germany for about £100. Popped it in and no more smoking or warning light.

Hope this might help someone...

The only blockage was as the EGR pipe plumbs back into the throttle.

So it sounds like the throttle body could be a problem, possibly inlet...
