There are pedal position sensors and throttle body sensors, not sure what your engine will have though.
IIRC there are two readings on each with opposing scales...

Can't recall how much a new one was, but while not cheap isn't wasn't enough to look at rescuing and refurbishing...

Does anyone know an easy (and free) way to get a VIN number knowing just the (current) registration?

It doesn't seem to affect remote lock/unlock though.
