Got an hour to myself this evening, pulled the steering column apart. Turns out there is a cable running from the gear selector to the ignition switch.
When you press the button on the side of the shift lever the cable retracts locking the key into the ignition barrel.
Turns out the liberal application of wd40 was needed on the cable as it was simply not returning properly.
Job done, key now out!
......now just need to put the engine back together
