The power difference is massive 221HP on 3.0 and 177Hp on 2.7, that's even less that 180HP I have on my current 2.5TDI A6. It's just 10 % smaller but 24% less power and the fuel consumption is not noticeably better and it's similar story for 2.4 or 2.6 vs 2.8 or 3.7 vs 4.2 - you loose a lot more in power than you give up in displacement but not gain much in economy. But it seems it does not matter for a lot of people as the are plenty lower displacement engines around keeping customers happy. Only thing that would keep my interest in 2.7 would be if it did not suffer injector failures like 3.0 as it can probably be tuned to 240 while 3.0 can be tuned to 280 so closing a gap a little bit.
