I'm thinking specifically of a USB to Serial adapter that I tried to use with an eprom programmer. Trying to get the virtual com ports to work with the FTDI drivers on Windows 7 was not an experience I plan to repeat!
Definitely sounds like Prolific adapters are less vexing
