Its part of the handbrake mechanism. The lever pushes the threaded rod forwards which provides the clamping force, but the thread allows the piston to move hydraulically too and more importantly adjust itself as the pads wear.

I looked in to fitting D3 calipers to get larger rear brakes without the shenanigans of LWB handbrake cables, but I'm suitably convinced the electric calipers are more trouble than they are worth.
