If you don't use it, you run the risk of parts 'rust-welding' together, contacts corroding and also any rubber bits like seals sticking to surfaces and getting damaged once you actually operate the roof.

My first car was a daewoo matiz, i didn't use the rear doors in it for about 6 months, and when my brother tried to open one of them, the whole roof part of the door seal tore because it was just stuck to it
