I took mine out today and had no problem releasing the switch from the mounting plate.
I did it by pressing in the retaining catch tips from the outside with a small plastic tool, rather then pulling on the loops.
I'm sending it in using Royal Mail's collection service which is currently no extra charge!

I then looked at cleaning the plate, mines a beige one so shows markings and chips.
I tested on the lower part near the screw; my "go to" chemicals for cleaning plastics, Meths and Isopropanol, both also soften and dissolve the paint!
They work well, so if you're very careful, gentle and quick might get away with them.

I used white spirit in the end, fairly effective, just need to find something to fill in the chips which show primer/plastic that is near-white in contrast. A raid on SWMBO's nail varnish stocks might prove useful?
