You can unclip a plastic cover off the front of the top of the engine and look at the belt easily enough. Look at it for a few minutes before you start so you know how it goes back. While it is off, clean the back and check the belt for splits or signs of ageing. You can wipe around it with a damp cloth if it is dirty/dusty, then refit the cover.
