At a certain age (again, assuming the same alarm as a D2 '8), the battery also begins to leak, all over the alarm circuit board, causing all sorts of weird behaviour, until it eventually corrodes enough of the PCB to stop working altogether.

It's a very common problem I believe, for Audis in general. I replaced my alarm unit recently (with a brand new one), after opening it up to find something like this, only mine was worse, and far beyond repair.
