Every degree colder it gets, the longer the engine takes to warm up AND the more fuel it's pumping into the engine to get the cats lit up as quickly as possible.
My Golf has an oil temperature gauge and it's noticeable that it takes about an extra 4 miles before it starts to register a temp over 50C (the point at which it starts reading) when you compare 10C outside air temp and 2C
