How on earth could that happen? I'm not aware of any work in that area on either side in my ownership!
Someone has attempted to remove the control arms without knowing about how the alloy uprights work. The traditional way to remove a taper from a steel housing is to give it a solid whack with a lump hammer. This briefly (in steel) distorts the taper and the pin pops free. The unworthy frequently try this on aluminium only to find it doesn't work as the pins are in the steel inserts, and from time to time simply pound away at them until they are smashed and then tell the customer its broken and they need a new upright (happened on FB recently).

The aluminium uprights must be dismantled with a special balljoint splitter when on the car. I take the whole corner off and then hit the nut with a hammer which pops the joint free, but you can't do that easily on the car .
