Ah, that makes sense. That inner lens is the one that silverd2 referenced in the other thread. It covers the main beam and nothing else. That would explain why only a portion of the lamp looks darker in photographs. I'd imagine the film he used was the same as is generally used as a window tint. But to be clear, to the best of your recollection, it was not the outer lens that was darkened? If that is correct, I see in my head how everything should go.
