Do you have the sender in the right orientation? The arrow on it points to the right hand side of the car (ie the other pump) which is counter-intuitive at a glance.
Did you replace the rubber ring at the top of the pump? If so I wouldn't worry about getting the cap back in the same place as long as its tight on the pump housing.
