I dont think its one them things you can easily tell if its about to die, the best you could do is function a few times and scan for errors after a drive.

Also get in there and have a look at its casing, they are prone to cracking and letting moisture.

But VCDS is your best friend like you know already, arrive, scan the car for faults, clear them, go for a drive and make sure it passes the readiness tests, and scan again after playing with as many functions of the car during test drive.
