Well, My RS6 did have (what I firmly believe to be) pretty much the same 6 speed box as the D3, albeit with different final drive ratios.
The changes were pretty slick from factory, and even quicker after the MRC remap. I mean instant. They had to be. 700 ponies would see 60 gone in sub 4 secs, so a rapid change was needed. Smooth as silk too, although you could catch it out when using tiptronic....
Our Q7, and most of my D3's have had a very 'comfortable' shift pattern on the box, no real urgency.
The D3 S8 though, and my C6 S6, both had a bit more urgency about them.
My conclusion would be that the 'S' petrols are set up for a quicker change, and the 8's and diesels are set more for comfort, which all makes sense.
Perhaps the diesels have a significant flywheel effect, and rapid changes are just not possible ? I know the V10 is a very lightweight engine, and changes revs like a motorbike. Its like no other car engine I've ever driven....
The D4 8 speed box is like fluid. You never know its changed. Its weird, its gone through several gears before you even hit 20mph. If you didn't have an indicator the dash, you'd never know
