The other is named “hicol” (maybe hires colour?) and I’ve no idea which model that was used on, or even perhaps NOT used on, but perhaps intended for... any clues?
The RNS-E (mk 1) directly drove monochrome screens in the TT and late (2004/2005) A6 C5 from memory.

The A4 B6 & B7 used the colour variant (B7 officially, but often retrofitted into the B6 with ease) and from memory the B6/7 screen rez was higher than that of the earlier D2 cluster. I think the A3 used it too later on, but can't comment on the mono/colour status. A6 C6 from 2005 went MMI, and the A8 went MMI from end 2002 so they were out of the running.

In fact, the D2 cluster, being the A8, and released in 1998, was likely Audis first stab at releasing a colour cluster as we didn't see it in any other models until 2005 I think.

It gets more complex, as the original D2 facelift colour cluster from 1998-2000 differed from the 2000-2002 version. The former supported the RNS-C, which may have been pre-canbus (don't quote me on that though without checking elsa which I dont have to hand)

From 2000, the RNS-C was replaced by the RNS-D, but it ran its own blaupunkt canbus signal which the Audi cluster didn't understand. This is why D2's of that era had the infamous 'TMC / Can gateway' installed behind the dash, even though they never officially supported TMC. The TMC module was a gateway between the blaupunkt canbus standard, and Audis.

To get any life out of the RNS-E at all, you have to bypass the Can gateway as the RNS-E talks native Audi canbus straight to the D2 cluster, but not in a colour resolution that the D2 cluster understands (seemingly)

It would certainly be very interesting to sniff the canbus traffic and see if any sense can be made of it. Other folk have made bespoke displays that come up on other models of Audi, so injecting graphics into the DIS via canbus is certainly do-able, just a case of whether the effort of getting the D2 one to work is worth it.....
