My understanding of it is you authorise payments before filling up from the safety of inside the car.
Then you get out leaving said phone in your pocket or car and fill up and go.
Not fill up then faff around with the phone in a cloud of explosive vapour trying to pay for the fuel in the cold and wind.
To me the process makes sense, shame I'm still waiting to find a bloody station that does it.
