I’m using my MBP 2011 for this very same purpose at the moment.

Annoyingly I have to use a virtual machine, that will only run on Windows (I tried and tried on Mac OS). So I have to boot into Windows using Bootcamp, then into a Remote Desktop.

A while back I updgraded the RAM, and years ago upgraded to a 1TB SSD. Like you I only have the non retina screen. I have hooked it up to our 48” TV, with an HDMI adaptor. It output at 1080p from memory. Quite the upgrade from a ~720p 13” screen.

I’m just thinking out loud, but maybe you could hook yours up to an old TV in similar fashion?

Save buying a monitor?
