My goodness, I'm late to this party and I apologise. I'm really sorry to hear of your troubles and hope there's a speedy and not wallet-busting end in sight.
Two things from me:
1) I'm fairly close to you, so let me know if there's anything I can do. I have VCDS (although I'm still learning how to use it)
2) If it is the mechatronic unit, it can be refurbished like mine was. Chester Transmissions did mine, but they're part of FATE, which has places dotted around the country. The nearest one I found to us is in Hertfordshire. I visited there after a suspected leak and they have ZF plaques all over the place and were really friendly. I think I posted their details before if you need them.
