The first thing to do would be to get it scanned. Then check to see if there are any error codes referring to the F125 switch, as that seems to be the likeliest culprit. Unfortunately with the D2, it doesn't give the date when the error occurred, so no way of knowing how long the error has been there.

Clear the error codes for the transmission within the transmission block itself, and then drive the car as normal. When you next experience the thump, get it scanned again, and it should hopefully only have errors relating to that.

Hopefully, it will just be the F125 switch, which you can still purchase (around £150), and there are detailed fitting instructions both here and on other Audi related sites.
