Agreed. I'm just wasting time and money now. As all the obvious faults are exhausted I will just need to get VCDS before I can get any useful information. Annoyingly thats why i took it to a garage with a good reputation advertising as over 100 years combined experience and Audi trained specialist technicians. I did this right at the start but as far as I can tell all they did was read the exisiting faults and clear them rather than try and diagnose the actual fault.

I dont kow anyone with VCDS who can do a proper check for me and I'm baulking somewhat at the cost of buying the genuine program. Think I might just have to go for it once my finances are in better order. The OH keeps booking holidays, so im constantly in a cycle of handing over vast sus of money! Anythign for a quiet life haha.

Has anyone used the c£30 VCDS programs you can get on the likes of ebay and amazon? Obviously copies but if they work well enough I'm happy to try them first.

To me it still seems like an engine speed thing. If you switch the car off then immediately go for a restart it starts up every time, leave it for a while and it doesn't. The OH will be home early on Monday so I can park it on the driveway and then try restarts every five minutes or so and make up a graph of time against cranking time and maybe cranking speed. Might give some useful insights but until I get some proper data from the car I'm p*ssing into the wind.

edit: The timing chain tensioners have started to rattle on most start ups now, especially when hot and there si a ticking noise on idle, so I suppose it could also be a crank/cam synchronisation problem. Can't see why a jump start would allow it to start if that were the case, same for fuel pressure.
