Thanks guys, it wasn't the highway setting - I checked that but I do have mine set to come on when it senses rain, so that may have been it.
On my way back from Milton Keynes last week, the lights turned off and started behaving themselves, so fingers crossed.
If I don't burn the infernal machine first, I'll consider buying a new gel thingy for it.
