[Latest update]
All sorted now, with many thanks to MJ for invaluable advice. The bolt snapped and attempts to drill it out ended badly so I gave up on that as a bad job and ordered a new wiper mechanism from Maria, which turned up next day.
Once I'd fitted it all back together again, I went to test and immediately discovered that the linkage was probably 180 degrees out - my windscreen wipers went up about 1/2 way and then tried to burrow down - I quickly switched off the ignition and sought help/advice. MJ pointed out that the linkage arm that attaches to the electric motor has to be aligned between two arrows with PL mark on the left hand side of the metal plate. Once I'd got it all back together again and tested it successfully, I spent some time aligning the wipers on the splined shafts to get them to park in what I think is the perfect position.
I was going to replace that lengthy plastic scuttle trim panel as mine has a broken edge where the moulded foam strip goes but was told that most of them in stock aren't really in great condition so I left it as it is.
