Only some of the very early hdd based navs can be updated without going through the dealer route. Even then it's not straightforward/risk free

If I was buying a new car with hdd I'd want it in writing from the dealer that they would include the nav update as part of an annual service foc. After all tomtom manage to provide free quarterly updates for their cheap as chips nav units and the old argument of creating and storing media doesn't apply when it's a download from a server in Germany!
