It's better to have the part numbers match, as there is less to go wrong. I think there are other units you can use but you must read up first.

programming should have (in theory) been a straight forward task, but the garage could not do it.

In the end I called a chap over who does all VAG coding and he sorted it. It's worth pulling the code first before you swap/replace.

My car would often throw up ABS module codes - loads of other related bits would be affected.
