I'm fairly sure it's not that in my case. I will usually guide the seatbelt back if it doesn't fully retract on its own. It's possible that on a few rare occasions I might have jumped out in a rush and trapped the belt, but I've never noticed any correlation with that and the switches breaking. They just seem to randomly break every few months. I've often wondered if the driver's door might be slightly out of adjustment, causing some part of it to make contact with the switches under certain conditions.
