The top arms can be a complete bugger to get out, there is a special tool some use (do a search on here and you should find) or you need to remove the shock to replace them.

Changing the arms can throw out the alignment if your bushes have failed for some time - when I did mine I also changed the track rod ends, so the steering geometry was wildly out after, and needed a full wheel alignment job.
