Yep, as Scott says, they are 5v wired in series with some resistors to drop the voltage down from 12v. The indicators for example are three individual banks of 10 LEDS - i didnt realise this at first and put 9v across on of the banks, as a few LEDs had already failed this meant that the voltage was still too high.

I quickly learned the lesson but not before a few more went. After this I started using a 3v button cell to test them as you can use it to power each bank (by just holding it against the solder of one of the LEDs in the bank).
