Though thinking about it, when I cut out the (partially pre-cut) panel to fit my ski hatch the material was pretty thin and as soft as toffee!
The felt material covering that behind-the seat panel in the boot is now back in place, but I don't recall noticing any serious structural/bracing clues on it's rather large flat surface.

To cut through the aluminium I used an oscillating tool similar to those used to cut plaster casts off limbs, it took literally moments to do.

The central seat belt on facelift D2s being a lap/diagonal type will obviously require significant strength in the upper mounting, presumably from a cross-member and/or the parcel shelf?

1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
