Mine used to do just that, until I changed the ally housings (it's an S8). I'm sure that the housings had nothing to do with it, but it was pretty mucky behind the mirror where all the moving parts are, so I cleaned it up a bit and gave them a squirt of WD40. I wonder if it was simply a bit of muck or lack of lubrication?
It's pretty easy to pop out the mirrors and have a look.
